Kokopu Schoo Local Curriculum The local curriculum is the school’s interpretation of the New Zealand curriculum. Every state school in New Zealand is required to teach the New Zealand curriculum but how this looks will depend on the value certain aspects carry. At Kokopu School we have many key features and strengths that are unique to our school and are reflected below. Vision & Values Kōkopu School’s vision is for all our children to be: INSPIRED (Inquiring, Nurtured, Self-Motivated, Positive, Involved, Respectful, Enthusiastic, Dynamic) and to live our school motto of “To Learn and Serve.” In our school, you will see we continuously refer to our values. Respect for Others, Respect for Ourselves and Respect for our Environment. Our values are part of who we are as a school. It is what we expect from ourselves, the children and the community. The values are closely linked to our PB4L, Tuakana Teina and Enviro Schools philosophies. As a school, we look to celebrate students who are showing our values. Proudly Country Kids We are a rural school and students have the opportunity to embrace being proudly ‘country kids’. Students show this through practical activities, where students are challenged and encouraged to be risk-takers, inventors, practical problem solvers, and entrepreneurs. They have a strong connection to the land and are kaitiakitanga or guardians of their environment and rural community. Agricultural day is an important event that brings our community together and provides unique learning opportunities for our students. Learning At Kōkopu School we have high expectations for student learning. We have a balanced approach which includes academic, sporting, artistic, cultural and social learning opportunities. Creative learning through an integrated approach with a local focus is important to us. We focus on students achieving their best and reward effort and progress, not just achievement. We have a growing focus on using the phonetical approach in reading (Literacy), utilize the Write that Essay program in writing and a strong numeracy approach in mathematics. We support and extend all learns to be the best they can be. Behaviour At Kōkopu School we have high expectations of student behaviour and demonstrating our school values. Learning and serving through our tuakana teina approach is important to us. We are a PB4L school (Positive Behaviour for Learning). This means we work hard to create a positive school environment that enables academic and social success for all students. This is based on the expectation that opportunities for learning and achievement increase if: Our school environment is positive Expectations are clear and consistent Children are consistently taught desired behaviours Children are consistently acknowledged for desired behaviours Children are consistently responded to in a fair and equitable way Environmental kaitiakitanga/guardians Students at Kōkopu School become kaitiakitanga or guardians of their environment and rural community. They do this through learning and looking for ways to make the school and local community greener, sustainable and more beautiful. This is evident in our local planting days and caring for our streams and waterways. Culturally Responsive Practice Cultural awareness is embedded in our daily routines and practices. We value the importance of cultural diversity being celebrated and acknowledged the unique position of the Māori culture and Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the NZC and our school curriculum. At Kokopu we strive to make learning relevant and effective for learners by drawing on students’ cultural knowledge, life experiences, languages, and connections. At Kokopu School we do this in a variety of ways. Our Tuakana Teina approach enables genuine and across school relationships that create a whanau culture and connections. We are committed to the revitalization of te reo in our school through staff PLD, student learning, involving our community and celebrating the use to te reo on a daily basis. Our whole school Kapa Haka/Tikanga program continues to provide great joy and pride as children learn together. Students love participating in the Kapa Haka festival each year at one of our neighbouring schools. We have a yearly whole school country study where we celebrate cultures, their histories, food and traditions. We look for ways to connect more with our community and use these to link for learning. The school has an ongoing commitment to develop relationships with the Korokota and Maungarongo Marae. Leadership We believe that all children have the qualities and attribute to be leaders. At Kokopu there are many opportunities for our students to experience leadership roles. House captains, student council, monitors, peer mediators, enviro groups, animal care, and cultural leaders, to name a few. Education outside the classroom Each year all our students go on camp and participate in EOTC activities. We believe the key to good EOTC experiences include; Promotion of leadership and self-management skills. Encouraging independence, interdependence and cooperation. Risk-taking. Physical, mental and social challenges that strengthen student wellbeing. Parental and whanau being involved. FUN! Community At Kōkopu School our local community is the heart of our school. Having been established in 1884, we have a long history with many of our families who have been here for multiple generations. This connection to people, the land, and history is important to us and adds to our learning. We have events that allow our community to be part of school and our school to be part of the community. These include agriculture day, planting days, sports days, cultural events, productions, open days, parent interviews, and more. We have strong relationships with the wider school community especially other local country schools through shared events and Community of Learning (Kāhui Ako).

This includes our school newsletter, email communications, social media, school website, and promotional materials. The school frequently publishes student artwork, written work, and photographs or videos of students participating in school activities. We will not publish a student’s image or work without written consent from a legal guardian. You may withdraw or update this permission at any time by contacting the school office in writing. Upon request, the school will promptly remove any published material relating to your child from our digital platforms. Kokopu School Cyber Safety and ICT User Agreement KOKOPU SCHOOL STUDENT USER AGREEMENT OVERVIEW Digital technologies and devices, like iPads and computers, are tools that can help us learn at school in all sorts of ways. We can look at interesting things online, talk to people, create new ideas, and learn how to do different things on apps and websites. When we use digital technologies, we need to learn how to keep ourselves safe, and make good choices in ways we behave when we are online. At Kokopu School we call this being a ‘digital citizen’. Good digital citizens help to make our school a safe and positive place for everyone. This agreement shares what Kokopu School does to help make learning online safe, and what we need to do. It is not always easy to understand everything about online spaces, because there are so many things to use and explore, and that’s why it’s important that we all try to make it as safe as possible. KOKOPU SCHOOLS ROLE Kokopu School wants to help you learn in the best ways we can, and keep you safe at school. We will do this by: making everybody aware of their responsibilities planning times in the terms to learn about positive online behaviours and ways to keep safe overseeing students’ use of school’s digital devices and online spaces offering access to the internet and online platforms using filtering and monitoring software to protect everybody helping students who need support to deal with online problems even if these happen outside of school keeping safe the personal information the school collects about you protecting your rights to a safe and positive online environment YOUR ROLE We want our school to be a place that is safe and friendly, where we can learn, play and explore. To do this we need everyone to choose safe, careful, and fair ways of using devices and online spaces. As a digital citizen this means you will: Keep it kind. When you are online, think about others and talk or share in a kind way. Keep it to yourself. Keep your passwords and information about yourself or other people safe and private. Only log into your own accounts. Keep it careful. Think carefully about what you share and make sure it’s something you are proud of and would be happy sharing with someone else face to face. Keep it real. Not everything you see online is real. It might look or sound real, but some things are made up or fake, so be careful to check or ask a teacher if you’re not sure. Keep it honest. When we copy or use words, pictures and ideas from the internet, we need to make sure we share these things in the right way and follow the rules for sharing things that don’t belong to us. Keep it fair. Make sure you check with others if it is okay to record them, or share photos or videos with them in it. They should have a say in what happens to things that go online if they are in them. Keep it responsible. When using a school devise, look after it and use it in the way it was intended. Be careful not to damage it and put it away in the right place. Only use it when a teacher is present. Keep it to learning. Devises and technologies at school are for your learning. Stay to the sites, resources, and topics that the teacher has allowed you to use. Use personal devices sensibly. Eg cell phones, smart watches, tablets. Make sure these are handed in to the office at the start of the day and collected at the end of the day. This includes school trips and tech. Google Workspace for Education School Email and Accounts In order to enable students to make use of digital technologies while at school, we will provide you with a Google email address to use during your time here. This is so you can access Google Workspace for Education core and additional services, login into different devices, and sign up to services easily. These email accounts belong to the school and we expect you to use it responsibly. Google Core Services include = Gmail, Classroom, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides etc Google Additional Services = Google Earth, Google Maps, Photos, Blogger, Canvas, YouTube etc WHEN THINGS GO WRONG Even when people try to do the right thing, sometimes things go wrong. If you or somebody you know does something online that isn’t okay maybe by accident or on purpose, your teachers at Kokopu School will help you to sort it out. If you see things online that make you feel worried or upset, your teachers will help you sort it out. The important thing is to tell a teacher or another adult you trust. Report a problem. If you see something online that you don’t think should be there, tell a teacher or a trusted adult at school as soon as you can. This is really helpful, and means we get to fix the problem quickly. The school will look and see how to fix it, and take away the problem. Online safety support. Netsafe helps people to be safe online. They can help you or your family if you are having problems online. They have free, private help for you and your family. You can get hold of them on the phone 058638723, or their website at netsafe.org.nz If something gets broken. Sometimes things get broken whether it was an accident or due to misuse. Take it to the teacher so that we can fix it or replace it. STUDENT STATEMENT I know about the ways I should use digital devices and online spaces at school for learning. I know that I should be kind, careful and responsible when I use devices, and when I go online, and this is the same for the devices that school owns, or if it is my own device that I bring to school. I know that if I behave in ways that are not safe online, or kind or responsible, that this is not okay at Kokopu School. There may be some actions that my school might have to take, such as not being able to use school devices or services. I understand and agree to use digital technology and the internet at school safely and for learning, whether it is on a school device or one I have brought from home. STUDENT DECLARATION (Year 5-8) PARENT/ WHĀNAU/ GUARDIAN DECLARATION (Year 0-8) I know that if my child makes choices or behaves in ways that don’t align with this Student User Agreement there may be consequences or outcomes that the school will talk about with me.

For your child’s classroom stationery list please ask at the office. A notice will be sent home by the classroom teacher if any further supplies are required during the year.
